Lemon Essential Oil


Lemon is known as the Oil of Focus.  This refreshing essential oil supports increased concentration, reduces mental fatigue, and restores energy. Lemon “infuses the soul with energy, confidence, and alertness.” Not only does Lemon combat negative emotions such as guilt and confusion, but it also promotes clarity, joy, and alertness. The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with some background information in order to establish a basic understanding of Lemon essential oil.

Lemon comes from the Rutaceae botanical family, which is the fancy, scientific word for citrus. One of the main chemical constituents found in lemons is d-Limone, a natural compound which contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The extraction method for Lemon essential oil involves cold pressing lemon rinds. The most common primary uses for Lemon essential oil include the following: blood pressure regulation, concentration, depression, digestion, disinfectant, exhaustion, flu, oily hair, hangovers, heartburn, kidney stones, cleaning, physical energy, purification, and stress. Okay, okay. So I am throwing out all these uses and you are probably asking yourself, where is the proof?

When in doubt, search it out on the U.S. National Library of Medicine website. You might be surprised to learn that there is substantial research supporting the various uses and potential benefits of essential oils. This study here found that the inhalation of Lemon essential oil reduced nausea and other unpleasant symptoms associated with pregnancy.

Lemon essential oil can be applied via all three application methodstopical, aromatic, and internal. Topical: Lemon essential oil can be applied directly to the skin on the area of concern or on reflex points. Please note: if you are applying Lemon directly to your skin, it is important you avoid direct sunlight for up to 12 hours. Aromatic: Lemon essential oil can be inhaled directly or diffused. Internal: add to a drink or take using a veggie capsule! Additionally, Lemon essential oil can be great in cooking. Tip: 1 drop of Lemon essential oil = 1 teaspoon lemon zest.

Everyday Uses:

  • Accidentally left your laundry in the washer all day? Refresh your clothes by adding 1 drop of Lemon to a quick rinse cycle!
  • Is there a strange smell lingering in your refrigerator? Put a few drops of Lemon on a cotton ball and leave in your refrigerator for natural freshness!
  • Struggling with seasonal allergies? Add 2 drops each of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint to a veggie capsule to alleviate allergy symptoms! 
  • Feel like you need to wash your hands but you do not have quick access to a sink?  Rub a few drops of Lemon in your hands and voilà! Instant freshness!
  • Is your silver jewelry looking a little dull?  Use a soft cloth & a few drops of Lemon to shine up that silver!
  • You know when you pull the price sticker off something and it leaves that annoying adhesive residue? Rub 1 drop of Lemon on the affected area to eliminate the stickiness!
  • Are you having trouble studying or focusing on an important task? Add a few drops of Lemon and Peppermint essential oil to your diffuser for the perfect concentration blend!
  • Tired of the waxy residue on your fruits and veggies? Add a few drops of Lemon to a large bowl of cool water and soak your veggies for about 10 minutes!
