Skipping Resolutions & Pursuing “SOULutions”

One of my favorite bloggers, Ann Voskamp, introduces the idea of “SOULutions” in this blog post – and the concept really struck a chord with me. Every year on December 31st, people around the world make resolutions – start going to the gym, eat healthier, save more money – these are just a few of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions. 

Why do we need to wait for a specific date on the calendar to set new goals and work towards becoming better versions of ourselves? I get it – New Year’s Eve brings so much excitement with the champagne, confetti, and sequin dresses. Why can’t we bring this same enthusiasm to any other day of the year? 

Maybe your original New Year’s Resolutions quickly became overwhelming. You are not alone – approximately 80% of people give up on their resolutions by February. It’s not a sign of failure, it’s a sign that it’s time to reassess. Break those BIG resolutions down into smaller, more attainable “SOULutions” and I bet you’ll end up pleasantly surprised with the results.

On December 31, 2017, I did not make any New Year’s Resolutions. Yesterday, I decided to make my “SOULutions”:

  • Be truly present – I don’t typically spend too much time on my cell phone, but I want to work on being even more present when I am spending time with the important people in my life. In today’s technology-driven world, giving someone your complete attention and time is quite the gift.
  • Stress less – I so easily get swept up in the day-to-day stresses of life. I’m constantly reminding myself that if a particular stressful event is not going to matter in a year from now (or even next week), then why should it consume my thoughts?
  • Read & journal more – when I was in elementary school, I spent my summers reading as many books as I possibly could and I miss being able to escape to so many other places. This week, I have scheduled some time to use Goodreads to determine the next few books on my reading list.
  • Increase self-care activities – for the past few months, I have been pretty good about keeping up with a self-care routine. I would love to discover new self-care activities and incorporate them into my current routine.
  • Enjoy the little things – when you begin to appreciate the little things in life, you realize that they’re not so little. Going on a walk with my dog, I was able to clear my mind. I noticed how good it felt to breathe in the crisp, chilly air and admired the way the sky turns pink above the mountains when the sun begins to set on a winter day in Nevada.

We don’t need the start of another year around the sun to inspire us make changes. Start today. Start tomorrow. Start next week. Are you ready to make your own “SOULutions”?!
