It’s finally September! I can barely contain my excitement awaiting the arrival of autumn weather, which is hopefully just around the corner! Nothing beats the wonderful scents of autumn–apple pie, pumpkin spice, crisp air, and spiced cider. Ready to create your own autumn escape with blends inspired by your favorite scents? Here are 10 of my favorite autumn essential oil diffuser blends:

Spiced Chai:

  • 3 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 2 drops Cardamom
  • 1 drop Ginger
  • 2 drops Clove

Apple Pie:

  • 2 drops Citrus Bliss
  • 3 drops Douglas Fir
  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark

Autumn Warmth:

  • 4 drops Cardamom
  • 2 drops Wild Orange
  • 1 drop Clove
  • 1 drop Cinnamon Bark

Ginger Snap Cookies:

  • 3 drops Ginger
  • 2 drops Cassia
  • 2 drops Clove

Pumpkin Pie:

  • 4 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 1 drop Clove
  • 2 drops Nutmeg

Happy Harvest:

  • 5 drops Tangerine

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass is known as the Oil of Cleansing. This refreshing essential oil encourages individuals to let go of toxic energy and promotes clarity. Lemongrass combat emotions such as despair, darkness, and negative energy. The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with some background information in order to establish a basic understanding of Lemongrass essential oil.

Lemongrass comes from the Gramineae botanical family, which is the fancy, scientific word for grasses. The main chemical constituents found in lemongrass are aldehydesnatural compounds which contain anti-inflammatory and hypotensive properties. The most common primary uses for Lemongrass essential oil include the following: airborne bacteria, carpal tunnel syndrome, cholesterol, cramps, bladder infection, diuretic, fleas, hernia, lactose intolerance, mental fatigue, muscular dystrophy, purification, retina (strengthen), sprains, muscle strain, tissue repair, urinary tract infection, varicose veins, and wounds.

I would also like to include a personal success story about my father. My father struggles with high cholesterol and for years, his doctor had him trying a variety of medications to lower his LDL cholesterol. These medications would somewhat help, but my father had to deal with the various side effects caused by these medications. At the time, I was fairly new to essential oils and my father was extremely skeptical. Let me emphasize extremely skeptical. Despite his uncertainty, he agreed to try a little experiment. Instead of taking his cholesterol medication, he began taking 3 drops of Lemongrass in a veggie capsule daily. My father continued eating the same diet and followed his normal exercise routine–the only difference was that he was taking Lemongrass and not a prescription medication. After a few weeks, my dad went in for his appointment and had his blood drawn. To his surprise and his doctor’s, my father’s cholesterol was in the normal range. Lemongrass has allowed my father to naturally regulate his cholesterol (free from side effects)! Lemongrass made my father an essential oil believer.

Lemongrass essential oil can be applied via all three application methods–topical, aromatic, and internal. Topical: Lemongrass essential oil can be applied directly to the skin (or diluted for sensitive skin) on the area of concern or on reflex points. Aromatic: Lemongrass essential oil can be inhaled directly or diffused. Internal: take Lemongrass essential oil using a veggie capsule! Essential Oil Beauty Hacks: Simple + Natural

How often do you clean your makeup brushes? You should be cleaning them about once a week because bacteria, dirt, and oil enjoy thriving in the bristles. Gross, right? I know…it’s hard to add one more task to your weekly chores, but consistently cleaning your  makeup brushes will keep your skin healthier! Thank goodness there is a simple and natural solution for you to easily incorporate a quick makeup brush cleaning into your weekly schedule! Grab a mason jar, washcloth, and a few essential oils with cleansing properties– now you are ready to go!

Cleaning Makeup Brushes:

I find it easiest to clean my brushes on Sunday, after I have used them for the day. Trust me…you’ll see how well this works once you remove your brushes from soaking as the water will not look very pretty!

  • Give your makeup brushes a quick rinse under warm water to get rid of the loose makeup particles
  • Fill a mason jar (or any glass) with warm water and add any of the following combinations of essential oils:
    • 3 drops On-Guard (Protective Blend) + 2 drops Melaleuca — this is my personal favorite combo
    • 3 drops On-Guard (Protective Blend) + 1 drop Geranium
    • 2 drops Melaleuca + 2 drops Lemon
  • Swirl your makeup brushes around in the water and allow them to soak for about 30 minutes
  • Give your makeup brushes another quick rinse under warm water
  • Use a washcloth for a final wipe and to reshape the bristles
  • Lay your makeup brushes on the washcloth and allow them to air-dry

Calming Face Toner:

The job of a toner is to remove any remaining impurities that might still be lingering on your face after cleansing. This refreshing + calming toner is wonderful for a quick facial spritz after washing your face!

 

 

Strong + Healthy + Long Hair:

Looking for a natural way to promote hair growth? This spray works miracles! I give my hair a basic weekly trim (sorry to all the professional hairdressers I just made cringe) and use this spray about every other day. Let me tell you…my hair has never been as long and healthy as it is today! 

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle:
    • 10 drops Rosemary
    • 10 drops Cedarwood
    • 10 drops Lavender
    • fill bottle with distilled water

 

 

Sun-Kissed Summer Hair:

This spray enhances the lighter ends of my hair and it also smells great! I spray the bottom half of my hair about every 3 days or so. I have noticed that my hair slowly continues to look like it is being lightened by spending a significant amount of time out in the beautiful sunshine!

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle:
    • 10 drops Lemon
    • 10 drops Roman Chamomile
    • 10 drops Cinnamon
    • fill bottle with distilled water

 

 

Complexion Serum:

This complexion serum is perfect to dab on blemishes due to its cleansing + purify properties! 

  • 1/3 oz. glass roll-on bottle:
    • 15 drops Melaleuca
    • 15 drops Lemon
    • 15 drops Purify (Cleansing Blend)
    • fill bottle with fractionated coconut oil

Wo(man’s) Best Friend: Essential Oils for Dogs

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”

Meet Bentley. Bentley is my 1-year-old, 125-pound Labradane (yes, a Lab and Great Dane mix). When I adopted Bentley from the SPCA, he was 1 of a litter of 8. At 7 weeks old, he was the cutest little ball of fur and he literally had to climb into his food bowl to eat. The SPCA said he was a “lab mix” and by mix, they thought Border Collie/German Shepherd. Wrong. Bentley exhibits many of the Great Dane traits…he is all about the “Great Dane lean”. Oh, and I should probably clarify the origin of his name. No – I did not name him after a fancy car. Bentley was named after the one and only, extremely talented Dierks Bentley.

Bentley LOVES to play in the snow, eat eggs with his breakfast, watch TV, and of course, listen to Dierks Bentley. Bentley is scared of plastic bags, baby gates, and the rain. Bentley fills my heart and soul with so much love and comfort. When I have what has felt like the worst day, coming home to his excited spirit instantly turns my day around. Dogs are special creatures and I think as humans, we can learn a whole lot from these selfless creatures.

Allergies: Yes, dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies. Doggie sneezes are no longer an issue! Apply Lavender to the pads on the bottom of their feet to reduce allergy symptoms.

Ticks & Fleas: In an 8oz. spray bottle, add 4 drops of each of Peppermint + Eucalyptus essential oils and top with distilled water. Spray your doggie once a day!

Calming: Massage Lavender onto the pads of feet, tips of doggie ears, and the top of the head! Now, I am going be honest. Bentley is a ball of energy and he does not particularly enjoy the scent of Lavender. However, I have heard that Lavender has worked wonders on other hyperactive dogs. Just as with humans, certain oils work better on certain individuals.

Bad Breath: found this great recipe for “Bad Breath Bones” which incorporates Peppermint + Cinnamon essential oils to naturally freshen doggie breath through a healthy, natural treat!

Sweet for Spring-Key Lime Pie Recipe:

For the past few years, one of my favorite Easter traditions has been to bake a homemade key lime pie! I have a few extra ingredients in my recipe for the perfect tart + sweet balance!

Ingredients:

  • 1 + 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2 14oz. cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup fresh key lime juice
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ***Lime essential oil***
  • ***vanilla extract***

Directions:

  1. Combine graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, and melted butter + press into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. Bake graham cracker crust @ 350º for 5-10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Set aside and cool.
  3. Combine sweetened condensed milk and lime juice until blended. ***Add 3 drops of Lime essential oil for a little extra zest!*** Pour mixture into pie crust and set aside.
  4. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar at high speed until foamy.
  5. Gradually add sugar, continuing to beat the mixture until the sugar has dissolved and soft peaks form. ***Add a splash of vanilla extract for a little extra sweetness!***
  6. Spread meringue over filling.
  7. Bake pie @350º for about 15 minutes.
  8. Chill for 8+ hours.
  9. Just before serving, garnish with fresh key lime zest. YUM!

Wild Orange Essential Oil

Wild Orange is known as the Oil of Abundance. This uplifting essential oil “inspires abundance, fosters creativity, supports a positive mood, restores physical energy, and aids in transitions. Wild Orange combats negative emotions like discouragement, nervousness, and the fear of scarcity, by promoting creativity, spontaneity, and abundance. This essential oil reminds the soul to give freely without the desire for compensation and to simply enjoy life. The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with some background information in order to establish a basic understanding of Wild Orange essential oil.

Wild Orange comes from the Rutaceae botanical family, which is the fancy, scientific word for citrus. One of the main chemical constituents found in oranges is d-Limone, a natural compound which contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The extraction method for Wild Orange essential oil involves the cold pressing of orange rinds. The primary uses for Wild Orange essential oil include anxiety, digestion, fear, insomnia, menopause, nervousness, uplifting, and withdrawal.

Wild Orange essential oil can be applied via three application methods­—topical, aromatic, and internal. Topical: Wild Orange essential oil can be applied directly to the skin on the area of concern or on reflex points. Please note: if you are applying Wild Orange directly to your skin, it is important you avoid direct sunlight for up to 12 hours. Aromatic: Wild Orange essential oil can be inhaled directly or diffused. Internal: add to a drink or take using a veggie capsule! Additionally, Wild Orange essential oil can be great in cooking. Tip: 1 drop of Wild Orange essential oil = 1 teaspoon orange zest.

Everyday Uses:

Finding Forgiveness

“Continue to love. Continue to forgive. Continue to grow.”

I think we can all be a little hypocritical when it comes to forgiveness. We expect others to easily and effortlessly forgive us, but when the tables are turned, we can be completely resistant to forgiving others. Forgiveness is tricky because it is something that takes place in our minds. I used to believe that I had to forgive people who broke me in order to heal and ultimately, move on. However, I now understand that what I actually need is to forgive myself.

Forgiveness for a Broken Heart: We have all been there. You think you have found “the one” and the next thing you know, you are left in the dust, feeling all alone, with a broken heart. Your soul is crushed and you feel utterly lost and completely confused. Will I ever feel that happy again? The answer is always yes. Happiness is something that comes from within. It took me quite some time, but I have learned to accept that I have zero control over the unpredictable actions of other individuals. Happiness is a result of your mindset. You should rely on other people to enhance your happiness and not to be the primary source of your happiness.

When I began picking up the pieces of my broken heart, I realized I had allowed someone else’s life and future to become more important than my own. How did I allow myself to get to that point? I spent months (yes, months) overanalyzing every part of our relationship. I ran hundreds of scenarios through my head and became so wrapped up in the “what if I would have said or done this?” You can’t put a timeframe on “getting over” something. I also knew that I did not want to end up being the type of person who “can’t trust” because one person broke all of the promises they made to me.

He did not provide me with closure, so I had to find my own closure through self-forgiveness. Ultimately, it does not matter why he chose to leave me. We all get to make our own choices and sometimes things just can’t be explained. He never asked for my forgiveness. For the longest time, I believed I had to forgive him in order to feel whole again. The solution for a broken heart is to forgive yourself. You put your whole heart into what was an exciting adventure. Forgive yourself. You have a better understanding of who you want to be and who you want to be with. Forgive yourself.

He still crosses my mind and I will wonder if he kept my handwritten letters or the canvas I spent an entire weekend painting, pouring my love for him into every single brush stroke. But then I have to stop my mind from wandering too far down a road with no future. There is no use in reliving memories that do not positively contribute to my future.

Love is not what hurt you, the person who did not really know how to love you is why you feel betrayed. It is not about trying to fix yourself because you feel broken. It is about being presented with the opportunity to start over and create something that has the potential to be even better than your wildest dreams. I know I am not perfect but I work every day to become a better version of myself. I must forgive myself for my failed relationships and mistakes in order to grow. And in the end, that is more than good enough for me.

Forgiveness for a Broken Bond: There are certain people in my life that I have effortlessly connected with. We thrive on the same energy. We have been there for each other’s best and worst moments. Your vibe really does attract your tribe. Over the past few years, my circle of friends has really dwindled down. And yes, that was a conscious choice I made. It was a choice I needed to make to bring back balance to my emotional wellness.

It is difficult being around someone who is always negative. It is mentally draining to try and stay positive when you are surrounded by negativity. Their negative energy brings you down and before you realize it, you have started to pick up on their negative habits. Negativity does not make someone a bad person and you should not feel like a bad person for choosing to head down a different path. Forgive yourself.

Cutting people out of my life made me feel so guilty until I realized time is my most valuable resource. Unlike most tangible things in life, you just do not know how much time you will be given in life. I want to make the most out of every moment in my life and I believe we should never feel guilty for valuing our time.

Forgiveness for a “Failed” Attempt: If you were to look at my transcript for my undergraduate career, you would see mostly A’s and B’s.  Now I say mostly because on that transcript, an accounting class will quickly jump out at you to reveal I also received an F.  I went to every lecture, read every chapter, completed the homework assignments, and then miserably failed every test.

At the time, I blamed my professor after he showed a lack of interest in really helping me discover ways to be more successful.  I had the opportunity to drop the class, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could overcome the obstacles presented by the course.  Despite the fact that I was pouring myself into the class, I had nothing to show.  I realized I only loved the challenges when my efforts resulted in successes.

Sometimes your best effort will not result in your desired outcome. Forgive yourself. I do not consider this experience a failure but chose to see it as a learning experience. After all the courses I had successfully completed through my academic career, this is the experience in school that I learned the most from. It completely changed the way I approached my classes because I became more focused on being open to truly learning.

I did not let a grade I received in one course define who I am. I learned to move forward with the assumption that I will continue to face challenges and persevere through failures because perfection is unrealistic.  I believe I can further develop my basic qualities through continued efforts.  Ultimately, I value all of my experiences, regardless of the outcomes because I will always find a way to forgive myself.

Whenever I begin to start blaming others, feel judgmental, or become overly critical of myself, I reach for my “renewing blend.” This blend promotes letting go of bitterness, mistrust, and anger.
