Essential Oil Beauty Hacks: Simple + Natural

How often do you clean your makeup brushes? You should be cleaning them about once a week because bacteria, dirt, and oil enjoy thriving in the bristles. Gross, right? I know…it’s hard to add one more task to your weekly chores, but consistently cleaning your  makeup brushes will keep your skin healthier! Thank goodness there is a simple and natural solution for you to easily incorporate a quick makeup brush cleaning into your weekly schedule! Grab a mason jar, washcloth, and a few essential oils with cleansing properties– now you are ready to go!

Cleaning Makeup Brushes:

I find it easiest to clean my brushes on Sunday, after I have used them for the day. Trust me…you’ll see how well this works once you remove your brushes from soaking as the water will not look very pretty!

  • Give your makeup brushes a quick rinse under warm water to get rid of the loose makeup particles
  • Fill a mason jar (or any glass) with warm water and add any of the following combinations of essential oils:
    • 3 drops On-Guard (Protective Blend) + 2 drops Melaleuca — this is my personal favorite combo
    • 3 drops On-Guard (Protective Blend) + 1 drop Geranium
    • 2 drops Melaleuca + 2 drops Lemon
  • Swirl your makeup brushes around in the water and allow them to soak for about 30 minutes
  • Give your makeup brushes another quick rinse under warm water
  • Use a washcloth for a final wipe and to reshape the bristles
  • Lay your makeup brushes on the washcloth and allow them to air-dry

Calming Face Toner:

The job of a toner is to remove any remaining impurities that might still be lingering on your face after cleansing. This refreshing + calming toner is wonderful for a quick facial spritz after washing your face!



Strong + Healthy + Long Hair:

Looking for a natural way to promote hair growth? This spray works miracles! I give my hair a basic weekly trim (sorry to all the professional hairdressers I just made cringe) and use this spray about every other day. Let me tell you…my hair has never been as long and healthy as it is today! 

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle:
    • 10 drops Rosemary
    • 10 drops Cedarwood
    • 10 drops Lavender
    • fill bottle with distilled water



Sun-Kissed Summer Hair:

This spray enhances the lighter ends of my hair and it also smells great! I spray the bottom half of my hair about every 3 days or so. I have noticed that my hair slowly continues to look like it is being lightened by spending a significant amount of time out in the beautiful sunshine!

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle:
    • 10 drops Lemon
    • 10 drops Roman Chamomile
    • 10 drops Cinnamon
    • fill bottle with distilled water



Complexion Serum:

This complexion serum is perfect to dab on blemishes due to its cleansing + purify properties! 

  • 1/3 oz. glass roll-on bottle:
    • 15 drops Melaleuca
    • 15 drops Lemon
    • 15 drops Purify (Cleansing Blend)
    • fill bottle with fractionated coconut oil


Additional Essential Oil Beauty Hacks:

  • Looking to enhance natural eyelash growth? Add 1 drop of Lavender to a brand new wand of mascara! Your eyelashes will become stronger and longer over a few weeks of daily use!
  • Struggling with a dry scalp and unwanted dandruff? Add 1 drop of Lavender to shampoo while washing your hair to stimulate hair growth and control dandruff!
  • Looking for a natural way to reduce age spots and wrinkles? Add 1 drop of Frankincense to your daily moisturizer for extra skin rejuvenation!
  • Has winter weather caused your nails to feel brittle and dry? Rub 1 drop of Frankincense on your nails for extra strength!
  • Need an early morning pick-me-up? Add a few drops of Grapefruit to a basic body wash for an invigorating shower!
  • Are your nails feeling weak and brittle? Apply Melaleuca to your nails after showering for both purification and strengthening benefits! 
  • Experiencing annoying acne spots? Add 1 drop of Melaleuca to your daily moisturizer for enhanced cleansing properties!
  • Razor burn? Apply Melaleuca directly to your skin after shaving to prevent irritation! 
  • Struggling with rough cuticles while you are trying to get ready for sandal season? Mix about 6 drops of fractionated coconut oil with 1 drop of Oregano and rub on cuticles/toenails!

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit is known as the Oil of Honoring the Body. This uplifting essential oil “teaches true respect and appreciation for one’s physical body. Grapefruit combats negative emotions like anxiety by promoting self-acceptance and encouraging integrity through acknowledgment and respect for one’s physical needs. This essential oil encourages “a positive relationship with one’s body based on love, tolerance, and acceptance.” The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with some background information in order to establish a basic understanding of Grapefruit essential oil.

Grapefruit comes from the Rutaceae botanical family, which is the fancy, scientific word for citrus. One of the main chemical constituents found in grapefruits is d-Limone, a natural compound which contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The extraction method for Grapefruit essential oil involves the cold pressing of grapefruit rinds. The primary uses for Grapefruit essential oil include appetite suppressant, bulimia, cellulite, dry throat, edema, gallbladder stones, hangovers, mental stress, obesity, overeating, performance stress, PMS, stress, and withdrawal.

Grapefruit essential oil can be applied via three application methods­—topical, aromatic, and internal. Topical: Grapefruit essential oil can be applied directly to the skin on the area of concern or on reflex points. Aromatic: Grapefruit essential oil can be inhaled directly or diffused. Internal: add to a drink or take using a veggie capsule!

Water Wisdom

“Life is simple. Just add water.”

Why is water so important for our bodies? Did you know that the human body is made up of approximately 60% water? It is vital that we continue to replenish our bodies with water for a variety of health reasons. Water is essential for healthy cell life, body temperature regulation, chemical and metabolic reactions, the transport of nutrients, and the removal of wastes. It is recommended the average person drink about 2 liters of water per day. That is about 64 ounces or at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Easy, right? Some people love drinking water, while others loathe it. Here are some tips and tricks to encourage yourself to drink more water if you find yourself struggling to meet the recommended daily intake.

Give a Flavor Makeover! Add 1 drop of your favorite citrus or mint essential oil to 8-ounces of water for a refreshing drink! Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, and Tangerine are all great citrus options! The wonderful thing about citrus essential oils is that they do not provide an intense sour flavor as they are cold pressed from the rinds of the fruit. Basically, you get the energy boost from the fruit, while only experiencing a mild citrus taste. If you are trying to kick those sugar cravings, Grapefruit will be your saving grace (the chemical constituents have been found to suppress sugar cravings). If you prefer a minty pick–me–up, Peppermint and Spearmint are also great flavor options!

  • Tip: When adding essential oils to water, you want to drink out of a glass or stainless steel container because the essential oils will pull toxins from plastic. Since we are trying to be healthy here, you can see the potential predicament you would place yourself in if you choose to go the plastic route.

Make it a Challenge! If you have the type of mentality in which a challenge really motivates you to push yourself, download a water app! Apps like Daily Water Free assist you in counting and tracking your water intake, as well as providing reminders throughout the day to keep you on a strict water drinking schedule.

  • Tip: It is important you consistently drink water throughout the day to keep your body fully hydrated. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water because that is an indicator that your body is already headed down the road towards dehydration.

Double as a Detox! There are multiple ways you can add flavor to your water beyond the scope of essential oils. I absolutely love the taste of cucumber water because it gives you that “relaxing day at the spa feeling”. And yes, in case you were wondering, cucumbers are a fruit. Cucumbers have anti–inflammatory properties and they are also a great source of potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin B. Drinking cucumber water will boost your metabolism and flush toxins out of your body.

  • Tip: Cucumber slices float, so top your water with some ice to keep the little guys submerged and fully infusing your water! 
  • If you are feeling extra adventurous with your cucumber water, throw in some pineapple for a tropical escape, or add a citrus essential oil!

Eat your Water! You can also increase your water intake by eating water–rich foods. Bell peppers (94% water), raw broccoli (91% water), celery (96% water), and cantaloupe (90% water) are just a few of the many hydrating foods. Click here to view a more in–depth list.

Chia, Chia, & More Chia! Chia seeds are a true superfood – they are rich in antioxidants, high in dietary fiber and calcium, treat diabetes, boost metabolism and energy, regulate cholesterol, and contain more protein than most plant–based sources. Quite the impressive résumé, right? Some people describe the flavor of chia seeds as mild and nutty. In my honest opinion, chia seeds are basically flavorless. Chia seeds are the perfect little package as they provide immense health benefits and they can be added to foods and drinks without affecting the overall flavor.

  • Tip: Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds to an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it as you are getting ready to boost your morning energy level. As if I have not already mentioned it enough, add 1 drop of a citrus essential oil and I guarantee you will start your day on the bright side.
