Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass is known as the Oil of Cleansing. This refreshing essential oil encourages individuals to let go of toxic energy and promotes clarity. Lemongrass combat emotions such as despair, darkness, and negative energy. The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with some background information in order to establish a basic understanding of Lemongrass essential oil.

Lemongrass comes from the Gramineae botanical family, which is the fancy, scientific word for grasses. The main chemical constituents found in lemongrass are aldehydesnatural compounds which contain anti-inflammatory and hypotensive properties. The extraction method for Lemongrass essential oil involves the steam distillation of lemongrass. If you are interested in learning more about essential oil extraction, check out my blog post here, which covers the basics of essential oil extraction and the importance of quality.

The most common primary uses for Lemongrass essential oil include the following: airborne bacteria, carpal tunnel syndrome, cholesterol, cramps, bladder infection, diuretic, fleas, hernia, lactose intolerance, mental fatigue, muscular dystrophy, purification, retina (strengthen), sprains, muscle strain, tissue repair, urinary tract infection, varicose veins, and wounds.

If you would like to do some additional research and learn about the studies that have been conducted on the primary uses of Lemongrass, the U.S. National Library of Medicine website is a fantastic resource!

I would also like to include a personal success story about my father. My father struggles with high cholesterol and for years, his doctor had him trying a variety of medications to lower his LDL cholesterol. These medications would somewhat help, but my father had to deal with the various side effects caused by these medications. At the time, I was fairly new to essential oils and my father was extremely skeptical. Let me emphasize extremely skeptical. Despite his uncertainty, he agreed to try a little experiment. Instead of taking his cholesterol medication, he began taking 3 drops of Lemongrass in a veggie capsule daily. My father continued eating the same diet and followed his normal exercise routine–the only difference was that he was taking Lemongrass and not a prescription medication. After a few weeks, my dad went in for his appointment and had his blood drawn. To his surprise and his doctor’s, my father’s cholesterol was in the normal range. Lemongrass has allowed my father to naturally regulate his cholesterol (free from side effects)! Lemongrass made my father an essential oil believer.

Lemongrass essential oil can be applied via all three application methods–topical, aromatic, and internal. Topical: Lemongrass essential oil can be applied directly to the skin (or diluted for sensitive skin) on the area of concern or on reflex points. Aromatic: Lemongrass essential oil can be inhaled directly or diffused. Internal: take Lemongrass essential oil using a veggie capsule! Additionally, Lemongrass essential oil can be great in cooking.

Traveling with Essential Oils

“A mind stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions.”

I recently went on an adventure to the “land down under” and primarily explored the incredible city of Sydney. Sydney is unique in the sense that it is an extremely large city, yet it exhibits a “local” feel. This was my first time traveling abroad, so I was both excited and nervous in the days leading up to my trip. With all of these varying emotions, I once again relied on my essential oil buddies. I was well aware I would face unexpected events while traveling internationally, but I had an open mindset and knew that I would go with the flow and make the best out of every situation, regardless of the circumstances.

Traveling Internationally: At first, I was concerned about traveling internationally with essential oils. I did not want to pack any essential oils in my checked bag in case there was an issue with one leaking. Thankfully, I did not experience any issues going through security or customs in Australia with my essential oils as I was in compliance with the specified liquid guidelines.

Defining Your Version of “Essential”: On an average day, I probably use around 10 different essential oils. For this trip, I was motivated to pack light (something I am not normally known for). I was able to narrow down my oil supply to just two oils. Yes, just two essential oils. Unfortunately, this meant I would be going without my daily eucalyptus shower. I also had to leave my diffuser at home, which meant no drifting to sleep to my favorite calming essential oil aromas. Rather than bringing my regular essential oil bottles, I stuck with the rollerballs as they provide a more efficient application method.

  • Lavender: this essential oil is a true lifesaver. Whenever I began to feel stressed during my trip, I either inhaled the Lavender aroma directly from the rollerball or applied the Lavender directly to my wrists for an instant grounding feeling.
  • Peppermint: if you have ever been on a long flight (mine was about 15 hours), you understand the many difficulties associated with an extensive flight. The meals you get on the plane are okay, and the cabin pressure can mess a little with your head and stomach. Peppermint is great for eliminating headaches and easing nausea.

Exhibit Awareness: I also selected Lavender and Peppermint for reasons beyond their physical and emotional benefits. Lavender and peppermint have relatively subtle scents and they are common fragrances that do not seem to bother other people. Trust me – you do not want to whip out and apply a strong and slightly unusual smelling essential oil on a plane with one hundred other people.

Meet Lavender – Your New BEST Friend: So picture this – I am anxiously awaiting to begin boarding the plane. Plot twist! I am informed that my flight is delayed for an unknown period of time. Inhale Lavender. The main problem with this flight delay was that I barely had an hour layover to catch my connecting flight to Sydney. Inhale Lavender. To make a long story short, I frantically ran to my gate once I landed in LAX, only to find out that I missed my flight to Sydney. Inhale a whole LOT of Lavender. Unfortunately, the next flight was not for another 24 hours. Hopefully, I don’t run out of Lavender before I even leave the country.

Remember the “Essentials” Beyond Essential Oils: After missing my connecting flight, I suddenly realized my rookie packing failure. My carry on basically contained school work, shoes, and my rain jacket. It probably would have been a good idea to carry some of the essentials with me, considering I was going to be on a long flight. Yes – I was that person who wore the same outfit for almost 3 days. United Airlines did provide a very basic amenities kit, but it would have been nice to have a few extra essentials.

Jet Lag Remedies: Sydney, Australia is 18 hours ahead of the Pacific Time Zone. Talk about an awkward time adjustment. Fortunately, when I first got to Australia (and basically throughout the whole trip), I was so very excited that I am pretty sure I was basically running on adrenaline. Returning home was a completely different story. Jet lag is no joke. There are a variety of essential oils that can combat the struggles associated with jet lag.

  • Apply invigorating essential oils to the bottom of your feet in the morning: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, or Wild Orange
  • Apply calming essential oils to the bottom of your feet before bed: Bergamot, Rosemary, Lavender, or Geranium

Have you had any unique experiences while traveling with essential oils? Do you have any additional travel tips or natural jet lag remedies? I would love to hear your thoughts!

The extraction method for Frankincense essential oil involves the distillation of the gum/resin of Boswellia trees, which grow primarily in West Africa. Emotions, Essential Oils, & Escaping Anxiety

“The body benefits from movement and the mind benefits from stillness.”

Nearly 40 million Americans struggle with anxiety disorders. Social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder, just barely tap into the range of anxiety disorders people struggle with every single day. Did you know that anxiety is the most common mental illness in the nation?  What is even more astonishing is that the majority of individuals who struggle with anxiety disorders do not seek any type of treatment. Even if you do not have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, it is likely that you too have experienced anxiety at some point in your life.

I frequently struggle with anxiety because I tend to overthink things, I put a lot of pressure on myself, and the idea of change can be frightening. When I let my anxiety take control, my chest gets tight making it hard to breathe, my stomach feels like it is tied in a bunch of knots, and my mind races with all sorts of fears. I find it extremely difficult to verbalize how I experience anxiety and I know that I am not alone in feeling embarrassed to talk about my anxiety. Even more, it makes me feel weak knowing that I continue to battle with balancing my emotions and taming my fears. Discussing anxiety is not easy and that is why I believe so many individuals try to function with their anxiety and allow their symptoms go untreated.

When essential oils were introduced into my life, I was completely unaware of the immense emotional support this natural health option could provide. Now, I am no brain expert – I knew after a frog dissection in my biology class freshman year of high school that I had no aspirations to end up in med school. However, I do have a basic understanding of the brain’s limbic system. I promise to keep the science of this short and sweet, but if you want more scientific evidence you should check out this website. The limbic system is responsible for our emotions, memories, thoughts, and hormone production. So, why is this important? Essential oils directly impact the limbic system.

I hesitate in using the word aromatherapy because a lot of people associate aromatherapy with “patchouli” and “hippies” and then they quickly begin to lose interest in the conversation. I wholeheartedly believe you will not truly understand the potential power of aromatherapy for regulating emotions until you experience the aromatic benefits of essential oils. When I start to feel extra stressed, experience low energy, or have difficulty sleeping – I reach for my oils. Essential oils have provided me with the opportunity to regulate my anxiety and uplift my emotions.

The moment I took control of my health and began to regulate my emotions with essential oils, I began to feel more optimistic and inspired. I have learned the hard way that I am unable to control everything that happens in my life. However, I do have complete control over how I choose to react to what happens in my life. Proactively approaching the physical and emotional dimensions of wellness will provide a sense of empowerment that will seep into other aspects of your life.  I was able to harness that strength and confidence to raise my expectations. I then began eliminating toxic people and activities that were creating negativity in my life and ultimately, bringing me down.

In case you missed it, you should check out my blog post here on the seven dimensions of wellness!

As we begin to explore the many types of essential oils available, I will emphasize which oils specifically help improve our many emotions. What natural health solutions have you found to be successful in combating anxiety and regulating your emotions? I would love to hear your thoughts!
